Alliance
for Sustainable Packaging for Foods

Key Principles

  1. Commit to the long-term goal of significant reduction of single use food packaging waste
  2. Honor the trust of the consumers and recognize the responsibility to provide highly nutritious, conventional and organic, product that is also safe from pathogens and contaminants
  3. While the coalition takes a long view that is chemistry- and technology-agnostic, recognize that plastic primary or direct-contact packaging is currently an effective way for reducing water loss and maintain freshness of the product and preventing shocks
  4. Support unambiguous and streamlined identification of packaging that will facilitate its use, reuse, recycling and composting
  5. Ensure access to compostable plastic or compostable composite, recycled plastic packaging that is appropriately identified as to prevent the contamination of the recycling stream
  6. Consider holistic life-cycle assessment tools to gauge the overall environmental impacts of changes in packaging regulations
